Line of Duty cast members
Martin Compston are set to reprise their roles in the popular crime series

The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
