Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
