Ipswich boxer Fabio Wardley Expected to Become World Boxing Champion as Ukrainian Champion Usyk Gives Up Championship
The UK's Fabio Wardley is expected to be elevated to WBO heavyweight champion after Usyk decided to relinquish his world title
This follows after the champion informed the World Boxing Organisation he would not engage in a required championship defense against Wardley
WBO Statement
The championship body announced that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his belt after deep reflection"
Usyk still holds the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, having beaten his British opponent at the national stadium in July to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion
He originally secured the all-belt title holder in spring 2024 by defeating the British champion, before vacating another belt five weeks later and opting out of facing the obligatory contender
"Organization head Gustavo Olivieri praised the Ukrainian fighter in a announcement"
"Officials expressed its profound respect, admiration and gratitude to the Ukrainian champion, an undefeated, two-division WBO undisputed world champion"
"His career stands as one of the most extraordinary and historic of the recent fighting history"
The organization continued that its institution will continue to support the fighter and his management"
Belt Timeline
Usyk won the WBO belt in two years ago by defeating Anthony Joshua and went on to defend it four times
In July, the championship body required discussions for a required title defense against temporary title holder Parker, only for a champion's back problem to force the postponement of the fight
British Fighter's Journey
But Wardley, 30, won the provisional belt from Parker with a significant shock in the championship rounds at the capital's venue in the previous month and was ordered to fight the champion before the September deadline
The championship body still needs to verify the title change but his manager Warren believes it is a certainty
"The UK has a new heavyweight world champion and a emerging fighting personality"
"Among the most remarkable journeys throughout my decades as a promoter and I could not be prouder of Fabio Wardley"
"Significant bouts in the future for 2026 as he maintains his title and creates a true legacy in the sport"
The champion started fighting relatively late, coming through the unlicensed white-collar scene and has had a limited professional record
