Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
