Ghostface Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.

The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that a trio of different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.

"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.

"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Abound

While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.

Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
