Explosion Claims 3 Carabinieri While Executing Property Removal Procedure in the Verona Area
Three police officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews entered the house close to the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.
Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and a third person who fled subsequent to the blast was located soon after. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.
The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area displayed the structure reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Property Situation
The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the property was subject to an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.
Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings caused the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Those injured by the incident included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.
He thought the explosion had happened on a level above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told reporters, adding that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
