Plot Overview
The 100-Meter Film chronicles Togashi and Komiya, childhood friends whose personal journeys split when they enter elite competition. Once the quickest elementary student in Japan, Togashi assists the less self-assured Komiya with the fundamentals. As the twosome progress into their adolescence and adulthood, Komiya steadily accelerates up the standings of elite competitors, while Togashi is stuck in a slump; both struggle with worries and uncertainties. Encompassing more than 15 years, the story tracks their internal hurdles, revealing the challenges of an athlete’s life, locked in a pattern of public scrutiny, performance expectations and sponsorship demands.

Possibly it’s down to the original work, but the film’s response to these complex dilemmas is somewhat facile; frequently, a character’s inner doubts simply disappear after a prolonged talk with a fellow athlete or mentor. But what the anime lacks in story nuance and rhythm, it makes up for in dazzling visuals. Utilizing rotoscoping, in which animation is drawn atop real-life video, the movie creates exquisitely intricate sprinting scenes. The athletic effort of a race is clearly shown, and the struggle and triumph of contests are engraved on the protagonists’ forms.
